We get this question a lot:
“What’s the lifespan of a heat pump?”
We know homeowners are looking for a range and not the exact day in the future their machine will need replacing. So we decided to create a post to answer this question for you and all the other South Shore Nova Scotia area homeowners.
The short answer for those of you who don’t want to read this post is a ductless heat pump should last 14-18 years. A similar life to an oil furnace.
Of course, this doesn’t consider that there could be new technological or refrigerant advancements that could lead to you wanting to replace your current unit before it’s useful life is over.
Let’s take a closer look at what can go wrong with a heat pump.
What Can Break on a Heat Pump?
Like most items these days there are circuit boards in both the indoor and outdoor heat pump units. These boards, after the compressor in the outdoor unit, are likely the most expensive item to replace on your heat pump.
For a Daikin, the brand we sell and install here at South Shore HVAC, you have a 12-year warranty on those parts. However, after that 12-year period, a board repair may cost a few hundred dollars. Not enough though to justify replacing the unit.
The compressor is the only piece that would justify complete replacement.
A compressor replacement will be several hundred and up to $1000.00. If you have a 10+ year-old unit that is looking at that type of repair, it is likely worth evaluating the complete replacement of the unit.
How Long Will It Last?
As mentioned in the intro to this article, most quality heat pumps, of which Daikin is, will have a useful life expectancy of 15+ years. We’ve seen machines that are older than this in our travels around the province.

What type of machine you have installed and it’s quality does play a role in a heat pumps useful life. A machine that only provides a 1 or 2-year warranty is just not going to last as long as a Daikin which offers a 12-year parts warranty, including the compressor.
What about the Warranty?
Warranty is a good gauge of quality regarding lifespan. Think about cars. Most import car manufacturers offer long powertrain and engine warranties on their vehicles. Why? They feel confident that little to nothing will go wrong with them. Heat pumps are similar.
Daikin offers a 12-year guarantee on their machines not because they expect them to fail in 10, but because they have such belief in their machine that it will outlast 12-years and beyond.
To ensure you purchase a heat pump for your home that has a long lifespan be sure to look at brands and models like Daikin that comes with an excellent manufacturer’s warranty.
